Memorization: Tools and Techniques

Verse Memorization Techniques
  1. Create your own personlized flashcards the way you want them for how you study best (could be printed or written, probably verse on one side and reference on the other, maybe the pre-jump words are on a differnt edge of the card than the reference, etc.)
  2. Memorization is put to the test best when you have someone listening to you recite the memory verse out loud to catch where you might have misremembered a verse or maybe even memorized the verse incorrectly. If you don't have someone to recite to you can take an audio recorder (nearly all phones have an app for this these days) and record yourself while reciting the reference, then the verse, then the reference again (don't forget you need to know the reference too!). Then go back and listen to the recording you just created while reading the memory verse and see if you got something wrong at any part of the memory verse. (*This is a great way to build confidence in your knowledge that what is in the verse is actually a part of the verse.)
  3. Instead of flashcards, use a memory verse app to track which verses you've memorized or haven't memorized. Many apps also have creative ways to practice verse memorization and reinforcement in memory. Find what works for you! (See the next section for apps you can use for verse memorization.)
  4. Read the verse(s) 3 times through, then break up the verse into memorable parts, attempting to say the verse out loud without error.
  5. Say first phrase 5 times; then the 2nd phrase 5 times; then the 3rd 5 times; etc - then come back and say it all together (getting your mouth used to the cadence, parts of emphasis, and parts that require more mental effort to say each phrase correctly throughout the verse).

Large-scale Memorization (such as memorizing multiple chapters)
  • The According-to Specialist and multiple-ing
    • In quizzing, a quizzer can pre-jump on a question, give multiple questions, then - *in the order the question was given * - give their answer for each question. The advantage here is the quizzer can secure an earlier pre-jump before other quizzers by taking on the challenge of finishing the quizmaster’s question through listing multiple questions on the spot based on their knowledge of the exact passage the question is coming from. This means that to obtain this advantage in quizzing, the quizzer has to know their scripture, meaning, they have to have memorized the scripture passage.
    • This skill is most useful when given the exact passage of scripture the question comes from. Typically “multiple-ing” (which is what this skill is referred to as) is done most often with “According-to” question types. It can sometimes also be done with “Situation” and “Context” question types.
    • Since there are also only so many questions in a quiz round, and so much scripture the questions can come from, the aim of this quizzer is to memorize as much scripture as they can (and also the references for each verse) so that they can “multiple” on as many questions as they can.
    • For example: A quizzer has memorized Luke chapter 12. When the quizzer hears “According to Luke, chapter 12” they know that whatever the verse is, they can create questions that they can answer from that verse. So by the time they hear “According to Luke, chapter 12, verse 2,” they are off of their seat to compete on the jump for the chance to multiple on the question.
    • Don’t forget: The quizzer has only 30 seconds to give all their questions AND all their answers - and if some questions have the same answer, the answer does have to be repeated on the correct question to be counted as correct. The quizzer does not have to answer all of the questions they gave; they need only to answer the question on the quizmaster’s paper.
    • Quizzers that choose to study and prepare to answer in this way are often referred to as “According-to specialists”. This is a very advanced quizzing skill, and every skill requires some practice.
